MARISSA

“NOOOOOOOOO! NOOOOOO! CALL MY FATHER! THIS IS A MISTAKE! PLEASE CALL MY DAD!” I screamed.

The infectious control team just told me I tested positive for HIV, and I need to start the meds immediately, and now they’re testing my baby. Lex was the only person I was having sex with; I wasn’t fucking my own husband because I was so in love with him. Lex couldn’t do this to me. He just couldn’t.

A nurse entered the room with a needle, and seconds later everything went black.

DARRIN

My heart was pounding with every step I made. I was paged and then told they needed me in my daughter’s room; it was an emergency. I already feared the worst, hoping Marissa didn’t struggle through childbirth like her mother. When I arrived in the room, Marissa was apparently sedated, and several of my colleagues were checking her vitals and administering medication.

“Nancy, you’re her nurse, what the hell is going on? Is the baby okay?” I asked, fearing the answer.

“Dr. Paden, infectious control came into the room without notifying any of her caregivers and informed her she tested positive for HIV, a pretty aggressive form of it, and they needed to start the medications now and test the baby immediately.

“Are you are sure?” I asked, his eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, we tested her blood nine times, she’s positive,” Nancy responded.

“Well test it ten! That’s my fucking daughter and you’ve all watched her grow up. She gets nothing but the best.”

I couldn’t even stay in the room; I ran out the hospital and headed straight home to my wife; I needed some answers.
